Unit 1
Grammar
Grammar is the system and structure
of the language. It refers to the combination, organization of parts, groups of
words, to convey meaning. In some
cases, we usually use grammar unconsciously. There are a lot of forms and uses
in grammar.
According to Weaver (2005), word grammar means different things
to different people. For ordinary citizens, it means the correctness or
incorrectness of language he or she speaks. For school students, this means
sentence analysis and terminology research. Grammar knowledge can help students’
correct mistakes and improve written work. A person can learn a foreign
language accurately only through the process of unconscious assimilation. When
language habits disappoint us, grammar is the definite reference basis. Therefore,
grammar is essential for students.
Grammatical forms refer to the composition and presentation of words in speech and writing form. In grammatical forms, we can identify parts of speech that there are nouns, verbs, determiners, conjunctions, exclamations, adverbs, prepositions. This can help us analyze sentences and understand them. It can also help us construct good sentences. Grammatical structures make sense to arrange words in patterns. We can see that grammatical structure exists in phrases, clauses, or sentences. We can also discuss how to form words through word-formation. An important way to form words in English is to use two affixes, in this case, prefixes and suffixes. Grammatical use refers to how the grammatical structure is used to convey meaning.
Based on our experience, we believe
that to teenagers teaching a second language like English, the grammar must be taught
because they are not obsessed with the target language, so they cannot fully
master grammar in an implicit way. This is why we searched for many methods
that can be applied in the classroom. These methods can improve the accuracy of students
in both form and use. Karant (1999) proposed a series of activities in which
she explained how to teach the passive voice through stories. First, the
teacher will discuss the topic with the whole class. And he/she asks the students
about the grammar that the teacher explained before. It is important that the
teacher shows new vocabulary by paying attention to the present simple. Also, the
teacher must explain the principal grammar and he/she must use examples of what
his/her students can understand de grammar. Students can practice using extra
activities presented by the teacher. Through grammatical points, students are already familiar with the written
form but need to explore the meaning more deeply. Therefore, a quick and
effective way to introduce the language is to specify the example sentences in
the class.
